Love the Venue Before the Decor

There is one major mistake that many brides and first time event planners make and that is thinking of the style and decor of your event BEFORE you confirm your venue. Sometimes this can work if you are lucky enough to find and book the venue of your choice or if you have the budget to bring in decor to completely transform the room. The venue you choose plays a huge role in the style of your event, think of the venue as your first stage of decor. This doesn’t mean that you can only go with decor that matches the style of the room, but the room does need to at least compliment the decor. Even not so nice venues can be dressed up into something nice but if the room screams early 90′s decor with floral patterns, gold curtains and roman inspired decor, it becomes a lot harder to then place ultra modern furniture with sleek lines, and leather.

A piece of advice that I would give to brides is, before you start setting your heart on what you want your wedding to look like, visit as many venues as you can. Don’t worry about booking an appointment right now, just make a quick visit.  Look at the building and the rest of the rooms to decide what you like. Then when you have an idea of the venues that you like, contact the events person there and find out more details, like when it is available, what the price’s are, etc. Most of the time the decor you choose will correspond with your personal style, so then the venue that pleases your eye most, and fits with the rest of your requirements will correspond with both your style and decor.

You need to choose what you feel most comfortable with and what tickles your fancy. If by chance you cannot find something available that you like or that fits within your budget then look for something that is a clean slate. Look for neutral colours, simple light fixtures, and little other decor. That way you are not spending your decor budget on covering up something that doesn’t match your style, and style of the wedding. By corresponding the type of venue you choose with your decor you also end up saving a lot in your budget as well. If you choose that you want your ceiling draped before your venue is chosen,  you may end up getting a venue that has beautiful, high ceilings and your money is spent on something that may not have been needed. If you do not have the budget to do everything you have dreamed about, try to be flexible and rely on trustworthy vendors and professionals to give you sound advice to have the best day possible.

The most important thing is that you don’t fall in love with an idea of what you want your wedding to look like (unless that idea has been in your mind since you were 5) and then not be able fit it into your venue or end up spending too much money on decor to cover up the things that don’t correspond, Especially when you are planning for such an important day, being disappointed about something that can be avoided never feels good and of course really puts the pressure on your event stylist who really wants to WOW you on your special day. Even talk to your decorating company and get some of their advice on where to go, they would love to help you out before hand and may have some great ideas that you may not have thought of!

Wedding Trends of 2011

Well we are already a month and a half into 2011 and in the way of event design it will be a very exciting year!  Just as the fashion world is being inspired by the early seventies, so is the design world.  For weddings and posh parties the new trend is jewel tones, lace texture, bold patterns, glass, and mirrors.  This is great news is for those that like the extravagant look but don’t have the budget, with this years trends it is easy to get the look without the dough.

Colour

The bold colours of the year are sure to make a statement at your event.  These beautifully saturated  colours in themselves portray extravagance, and in ancient times were even used for only royalty. Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, and Yellow are the big ones and I am sure you will notice them in many great graphic poster’s from musician’s and trendy ad’s from the seventies.

Fashion

As you may have already noticed in many wedding gowns, texture’s such as lace or bold clean floral patterns are adding to the already stunning shape of the dress.  The maxi gown style and baby doll waist has inspired the wedding gown designers. Now if you google fashion from 1970 you will see what I am talking about!

Decor

Now this is were I get really excited of course because this is my passion!  Table cloth’s with bold patterns and large prominent textures make a huge statement when guest’s walk into the event.  These can become pricey, but to keep the effect without using all of your budget another option is to only use them on the prominent tables, such as the head table.  You can then use a colour that corresponds for the remaining tables.

Unique items such as lounge furniture or unique acrylic chairs are also making a huge statement.  Of course Chivari chairs are always beautiful but as designers, we are trying to keep moving forward and create original designs with extraordinary pieces.

For table tops and room decor, original pieces such as candelabras and vases with bold texture or sparkle and shine are great design features to add to your event. Clear glass and mirrors are simple things that are trendy this year and they add a great sophistication to your design.  Gems and small touches of sparkle in the details will make all the difference, and of course even more if they are in a bold colour as well.

As every year brings new and exciting design, this year will not fall short.  There is such a broad spectrum that designs are on, there are no limits to what you can create.  I would love to help anyone with their design so if you have any questions or would like tips, please contact us!  Also stay posted to see how our clients events will turn out, we are sure to have a great year!

At the beginning of the year Perspective Event Design received a great opportunity to showcase a new distillery in Kelowna as well as show some hopefully potential clients exactly what we do!

2nd Thursday is a monthly networking event that takes place every second Thursday of the month.  It is open to everyone but is directed more towards the marketing and creative industry in the Okanagan.  It is meant to unify the marketing, media, and creative industry and from what I have seen is doing an excellent job.  Small and new business’s have a much better fighting chance when they have an entire industry to support them and there is no shortage of support from anyone in the group.

A great thing about networking events, especially this one, is that it is a great opportunity to showcase and highlight new business’s to the Okanagan.  Urban Distilleries did a great job showcasing themselves at this month’s event, Mike Urban volunteered to host the event at his location at 6-325 Bay Ave.  People were able to get tours of the distillery  and taste the signature Spirit Bear Gin (which is amazing).   The retail space was also the perfect spot to hold an event like that.

RauDZ and Liquid Chef Jerry Jobe also contributed greatly that night.  They are not new to the community but it was such a treat for the guests of the event to taste the excellent food that Chef Rod Butters is so well known for!  Liquid Chef Jerry Jobe also highlighted his hopefully soon world famous Pirouette Cocktail (which was amazing) using Urban Distilleries Spirit Bear Gin.

I was very excited when Richard Taylor of RT Strategy’s had contacted me back about using some of my decor for 2nd Thursday.  As what I do has left a few people a little bit confused, which could also come from me not being able to “verbally market” myself yet, I thought this would be a great opportunity to market myself the best way I know how.  As Urban Distilleries had not filled their retail store yet, it was a great room and was a beautiful blank slate that just needed a few touches to soften it up.  All we needed to add was some candles, more seating and a few little extras.  So that is exactly what we did, candles were dispersed throughout the room to soften the room, and in one corner we added a lounge area with two black leather sofa’s and a curly willow arrangement with hanging votive holders.

The entire night turned out very well, We met some great new people, and it was fun to help and work alongside some great professionals!

Wedding Trends

Well another decade is now in the past and as I was doing some trend forecasting I had a thought; just as fashion does its circle and is inspired by trends of the past, weddings fashion’s do the same.  Now keep in mind that everyone of course has their own personal taste, but in each decade there were definitely some trends taking the lead.

Lets start with the 1960′s, the decade that denotes change in several categories.  In the design eye, texture seemed to be a staple, lace was desired on wedding dresses with a thin clean line waist.  Colour scheme’s in the home and rest of the design world had begun to get brighter but when it came to weddings most were tending towards the muted versions of colourful sixties posters, tones like light pink and blue, sea foam green, and light sunshine yellow.  The trends in the sixties were starting to move in a very bold direction.

In the 1970′s however we became much bolder, with colours in every aspect of design moving to a bold orange, green, yellow, and of course mixed with a brown. Fluid design was big in the 1970′s and we have already seen a lot of it come back in the past while with the ever classic Eames furniture.  Clean symmetrical lines combined with asymmetrical design inspired some great fashion statements.  Glass and mirrors were much more widely used in interiors and in the most recent decade is inspiring some great events.

Well if you thought we were getting bold in the seventies, my favorite decade to go back to for design is the eighties!  Much brighter colours like fluorescents and completely bizarre accessory pairings were the latest fad.  And when we look back at the weddings, the shoulder pads we all loved went to excessive proportions in wedding dresses.  This was Puffiness at its finest, and of course we couldn’t stop with clothing fashion, hairspray could be smelled for miles and as the decade went on this fad moved to the men as they felt they needed to sport a mullet.

In the early 1990′s puffiness was still in but we added satin for some shine, more lace, and floral patterns were definitely a leading trend.  Fabric in both interiors and weddings was a high priority, most were in pastel colours and of course more floral patterns.  As the nineties moved on lines became sleeker and design moved to the simple lines again.

And because this last decade is much more prominent in our minds its harder to pin just a few trends.  What we can say is that colours were bright, patterns were bold, and more recently glass, mirrors, and sparkle is what was seen in most weddings.   No matter what the era we can appreciate the trends because even today there are tidbits from every era that are inspiring fashion and design.  I think that is the best part of any creativity, it comes from something we have seen somewhere, whether you can remember it or not.  That is what keeps all designs connected, and makes fuel for designers to keep creating.

Thank You for the Warm Welcome

Well here I am trying to promote myself and my business and please pardon my language but it still scares the s*#@ out of me.  I love to socialize, meet new people, learn new things and go on new adventures, but it takes a lot of persuading on my part to actually follow through with stepping out and placing myself in vulnerable places.  So here it is, Perspective Event Design!  My passion and my creative outlet and I am trying to getting paid for it, it’s crazy but I am determined to make it work.

I want to help brides and event planners to create art and atmosphere at their events,  not just use the same decor that everyone else has so every event looks the same.  Every event that is designed by me has a piece of me in it, not necessarily my style but my heart and soul.  As soon as someone talks to me about decor for an event, ideas are running through my head 24/7, I am filtering through the completely crazy, and the not crazy enough to find the perfect balance for every detail.  Then when everything is said and done I hope that everyone is happy and had a great time at the event.

Since starting to market myself (which still seems like it hasn’t been much, but at the same time has gotten me much farther than I expected) I have had  such a warm welcome for my ideas and from the industry.  I have had such great support from school colleagues, previous employers from Vancouver, and from industry professionals in the Okanagan. I am so excited for what is to come in the future and to work with any of you reading this.  I also want to say thank you to all of those that I have met so far for the warm welcome, especially in the on-line world which is very intimidating to me.  The community sense that I have been getting is amazing and I cant wait to dig deeper into it and get to know all of you more!
